The background on poker that can never hurt a newbie!

The game of poker is played with the help of various decks ranging from 32, 36 or 54 cards, but the deck of 52 cards (hence excluding the Jokers) is usually employed. Several players (two and more – up to ten people per one game) gather at one playing desk. The values of the cards decrease from the Ace down. The Aces can act both as the lowest and the highest card depending on the combination the player is building. The game of poker consists of several stages depending on the exact variety (Taxas Hold’em, Omaha, Draw poker etc.) called rounds or “streets”. At the beginning of each the cards are dealt to the players, then the players may make stakes or pass (quit the current game). The winner is the player whose card combination is the best of the five represented at the desk or the one who can make the other players quit through bluffing.

Just as in any other kind of gambling poker has no clean, 100% winning game theory. This is easily explained by the fact that the players usually do know each other thus the bluffing strategy can yield good results (the way professional poker players try to hide any emotions they are getting from the cards they had been dealt gained its own phraseology – the “poker face” – the face that shows no emotions at all). Also only a very limited piece of information are available to the players throughout the game – they only know the cards they had been dealt and they can roughly calculate the cars the other players could have gotten from the deck depending on the cards that had already been opened on the table.

The bluffing strategy includes a whole range of means that should help a player win – the bluff, the half-bluff, check-raise, and steal of the blinds. Besides this rather psychological ways of winning a game of poker which becomes far less effective when the game is held on-line and you can’t see your opponents’ faces a gesture. Still there is a so-called “fundamental poker theorem” developed by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth – “each time you play a combination differently from the way you would have played it knowing the cards your opponents have they win, and each time you play a combination as if knowing the cards of your opponents they lose and vice versa – each time they play their cards as if knowing the cards you have – you lose”. This might appear a little too far-fetched and philosophical, but the key element here is certainly right – your chances of winning in a poker round are totally depending on the way you can calculate the moves and cards of your opponents and the decisions you are able to make and follow through basing on those conclusions. Besides the complicated gaming strategies poker as any other kind of gambling is also highly dependable on the sheer luck you have any other night.
